My Longest Standing Hobby

When I was 10 my step brother bought a Nikon D90. It was a random chunky DSLR. He would take pictures of just about anything and everything. Him being my cool older brother I just wanted to impress him, but he would never let me use his camera without him. I mean, obviously, it was probably his first big purchase and ultimately the one that launched his career, as he’s now a successful videographer and photographer.

The first thing I was able to take pictures on was a little LG Rumor 2, before the smartphone era. By this time we didn’t live together anymore but anytime I would see him I would proudly show off some of the pictures I took. They were terrible, and mostly pictures of my friends and I doing stuff that would get us arrested or cancelled today, but behind that it was just a way for me to bond with my brother.

Around this time I started to dive deep into photo albums that my mother left behind. She captured every moment, all the weddings, family gatherings, friends, strangers, so many things that told stories that I would never get to hear from her lips. I realized then that photos were more than just photos, and looking back at some of those debaucherous pictures I have of my friends on that LG Rumor 2 I realize how many of them are no longer with us and how short life is. Not only is photography a creative outlet for me but it’s a way to freeze time in place forever, and keep memories and people alive long after they’re gone from our world.

On this page I’ll be uploading some of my favourite pictures I’ve taken. Some might have meaning behind them, some might not, but it’s a way for me to share my perspective of the world.
